The Navy Act,1957

Section 87. Duty to receive or keep in custody

(1) The commanding officer shall be responsible for the safe custody of every person who is in naval custody on board his ship or in his establishment.

(2) The officer or 1[sailor] in charge of a guard, or a provost-marshal shall receive and keep any person who is duly committed to his custody.
