All about Soap Nuts

Soap nuts or Soapberry, also sometimes referred to as Washing Nuts or Ritha / Reetha (in Hindi),Ringo in Konkani contain ‘Saponins’, which have the ability to clean and wash. When in contact with water, it creates a mild suds, which is similar to soap.

Did you know that soap nuts make an excellent natural laundry detergent?

Unlike the harsh detergents that are sold commercially by many manufacturers, these natural detergents are effective, as well as gentle. They do not contain bleaching agents. You can use them safely with or colored clothes. Laundry done with them is chemical free. The laundry also comes out odorless.

Can you believe that a product that grows on soap nut trees can actually be used to get your clothes clean?

For Natural Laundry Detergent, you can use them in one of two ways:

1. Toss 4 or 5 Nuts in a small muslin or white coton bag and throw it in with your laundry. The nuts will do 4 or 5

loads.Soapnuts are both Ecological and Economical when compared to other forms of detergents. 1 kg of soapnuts can be used for upto 150 loads of laundry.do not throw away used shells for next wash add just 2 more new shells

2. Boil 10-15 whole / crushed Soap Nuts in half ltr of water for 30 minutes. Remove shells before cooling. The liquid you have is now a concentrated, chemical free detergent. The leftover shells can be placed in your compost. Use 3/4 Tbsp or 45 ml of this detergent with each load of laundry. This allows you to do approximately 20 loads of laundry.

They can be used, in the liquid form, for cleaning just about anything. From dish washer detergent, to window & glass cleaner, to repairing oily or dry hair. They are a great multi-purpose cleaner.

For medicinal purposes:

Soap nuts have anti-microbial properties which make them excellent for bathing purposes. They keep the skin smooth, protected and free of infections. They are great for people suffering from eczema and other skin disorders.

They are also used to relieve conditions like eczema and psoriasis. They do not contain any chemicals that irritate the skin. Soap nuts are frequently used by people with extremely sensitive skin. They have a unique anti-microbial property that helps kill germs and reduce skin problems. What’s more, soap nuts are also used as cleansers and homemade shampoos to remove lice.

For Dandruff
Apply the liquid soapnut on scalp and leave on for 5-10 minutes. Make sure the liquid does not get into the eye as it will burn. Rinse hair with water. Following this procedure regularly will not only help prevent dandruff, but will also keep your hair soft and strong. You can also replace the soapnut liquid with soapnut powder.You can use mix of shikakhai poweder and soapnut powder too.

Consuming Soap nut liquid is harmless, so you can purify your etable vegetables too.Soak your fruit and vegetables for approximately 10 minutes in the soapnut liquid. Rinse off and enjoy this food free from harmful chemicals and residue.

Mosquito Repellent
Spray liquid onto your hands and then rub onto bare arms, legs or face. Safe and gentle to use for babies and children.

For Pets
wash your pet’s fur. It will leave the fur soft and manageable. Also spray directly onto pet’s fur to help repel mosquitoes.

Cleaning
For Floor or industrial cleaning, take some half Kg soapnuts or around 50 and 200gm neem seeds or nuts, if you do not find neem seeds/nuts you can add neem leaves too, crush both boil in 3 ltr of water till it reduce to half. This will best Natural cleaner and disinfector.
