The country’s newest family portrait shows life is shifting steadily in Canada: lovers are increasingly steering away from saying “I do,” more grown children are failing to launch and the typical household is more likely than ever to be headed by singles, same-sex partners or childless couples.Statistics Canada reported Wednesday that for the first time in history married people are in the minority, with the number of “unmarrieds” edging up to 51.5 of the population aged 15 and over, compared to 38.6 per cent two decades ago.
The number of families without children in their homes, at 42.7 per cent, also surpassed the 41.4 per cent of households with children, reflecting a population of aging empty nesters and emerging “baby busters” who are having fewer kids and putting off parenthood until later in life.
