AYURVEDIC SKIN CARE

The skin is a barometer of a person’s health. It also provides clues to one’s Ayurvedic constitution. While vata skin tends to be thin with fine pores, and suffers from dryness and wrinkles, in case of a pitta constitution, the skin is usually delicate, fair and red toned. It often has freckles, moles or acne and burns easily. The skin of a person with kapha dosha is oily, smooth, moist and thick with a tendency towards large pores.

Skin that has been properly cared for stays youthful, vibrant and clear. Neglected skin ages prematurely, becomes dull and blemished. Regularly consumption of milk, honey and yogurt is good for nourishing the skin and prevents premature aging.

Some common skin problems and easy natural remedies are described below:

Acne and Pimples

According to Ayurveda, acne, pimples and black heads are caused by the aggravation of all the three doshas. The primary aggravated dosha, however, is pitta. Pitta dosha symbolizes heat or fire in the body. This body heat is increased by excessive alcohol, smoking, and caffeinated drinks. Bad food habits such as eating white flour and white sugar products, greasy, fried and spicy food, together with stress, tension, polluted environments and excessive use of chemicals also aggravate pitta dosha. This aggravated dosha then erupts on the skin as acne and pimples.

Easy Home Remedies

Drink half a cup of aloe vera juice, twice daily.

Applying a paste of nutmeg and a little water is also very effective.

Orange peel face packs are also helpful. Pound orange peels to a paste with a little water and apply on face.

If you have constipation, take a tablespoon of Ayurvedic triphala powder at bedtime with warm water or milk.

Premature Aging

Symptoms of premature aging are excessively dry skin, skin wrinkles, dried up body tissues, limp muscles, and joint pains. These are general symptoms of aging, but if these appear at an early age, one should pacify one’s aggravated vata dosha since aging is caused by imbalanced vata.

Vata dosha is usually aggravated by excessive thinking, stress and tension, overwork, irregular sleeping and eating habits, and by eating too much of cold and dry food. Artificially preserved or frozen food, and chemical medicines tend to aggravate vata dosha, causing premature aging. Excessive exposure to sun light, chemicals and cosmetic also absorbs the body’s natural moisture and causes an imbalance of vata dosha.

Black Heads

Aggravation of kapha dosha (mucus, body lubrication) and improper cleansing of skin cause black heads. When kapha dosha is aggravated the skin becomes excessively oily. And if this excessive oily skin is not cleansed properly, this oil together with atmospheric dust clogs the skin pores, causing black heads.

Kapha dosha is imbalanced by eating too much of greasy food, white sugar and flour products, rich desserts, creams and butter, excessive sleeping habits and daytime siestas.
