Recently, the hashtag #StopLegalTerrorism was trending on Twitter. People protested against the dowry law misuse and discussed the eradication of the misusing menace from Indian society.
So how do we deal with this social stigma? We live in a society where hypocrisy is on the rise. People do not openly support the system. However, deep inside themselves, they seem to put faith in it.
According to a report, on an average, more than 15,000 deaths of men each year are due to the dowry law misuse. Men are often harassed by wife or in-laws when families are unhappy in the name of dowry demand even he has not demanded. There are many reports of men committing suicides due to humiliation and harassment related to dowry law misuse.
The rapacity has led to horrific deaths of thousands of men all over the country as they’ve not been able to face wife and the in-laws’ ever-increasing demands to control him and get his assets.
Dowry law was made in good intention to help bride in her husband home. The practice of Stridhan is a custom and is not limited to well-to-do families. In fact, poorer sections of society also follow the same custom, but when marriage is on the brink of divorce or Bride is not able to adjust to husband home same Stridhan they term as Dowry.
Even there was no demand still most of the time women family claim that boy side demanded, the society think practice Stridhan is a custom so everyone assume that boy demanded and term Stridhan as dowry, because of cunningly drafted law make man guilty on one word of married women and the Burdon of proof lies on men.
Often Women organisation shows with few incidents that, every women face harassment and persecution in their new ‘homes’ after marriage because of dowry. Ultimately, many either end their lives or are murdered by in-laws. There have been multiple reports of hanging, poisoning and ‘bride burning’. But matter of fact such incidents are few, as per NCRB records there is 85% of acquittal in all dowry complaints.
The Dowry Prohibition Act, enacted on May 1, 1961, is intended to prevent the giving or receiving of dowry. Under this Act, what Feminists claim as dowry comprises is property, goods or money given by either party to the marriage by the parents of either party or by anyone else in connection with the marriage to the bride. In reality that is Stridhan.
Even though Indian laws against dowries have been in effect for decades, and very few reports atrocious on women and number of dowry deaths reduced to zero.
According to the National Crime Records Bureau statistics, in 2012, nearly 2,00,000 people, including 47,951 women(husband Mother and Sister), were arrested for dowry offences. Conversely, only 15 per cent of the accused were convicted. This shows hight of misuse. Total 85% innocents are harassed with this law.
Feminists give solution and demand Women need to be empowered. They need education to become financially independent. Parents should focus on investing money and time to secure their daughters’ futures right after birth and pave the way for them to be free-thinking individuals who can live life on their own terms. Which give boost to misuse dowry law. Instead teaching them take and share responsibility of family equally.
Women Ministry, women Organisations and Feminists strongly oppose any dilution of dowry act, as it is already drafted not to punish if law misused, they do not want any change in the law, because they can show false statistics of total complaint registered without showing 85% are acquitted. on that total only they can demand Funds from government. These ministries are not bothered about women, whos marriage / Family is broken, childrens are separated, but they show everyone that they work women, they pay media to write articles on fake reports and statistics, once a while is any incident happens then they come down to street with huge numbers to show many are raped/harassed/murdered, because of these there few real women suffer…. so the Dowry the misuse continued till all Women wake up and fight against these Feminists.
