Very few £5 Oranges were used for postage. Only 246,759 stamps were issued to post offices for use over its life of 21 years. Only around 8,000 are still in existence today. The £5 Orange stamp was the highest value pre-decimal stamp ever to be issued. • The telegraph stamp is much rare, both unused and used, than the £5 postage stamp.

The £5 Orange was originally introduced in 1877 as a Telegraphs stamp for paying for bulk and high-cost telegrams. In 1881, all Telegraphs stamps were withdrawn and replaced with postage stamps, but the Telegraphs plate was adapted for the £5 Postage stamp in 1882. The £5 Orange was also used for other purposes, such as receiving payment for excise duty on tobacco and whisky.
One with Brandon certificate sold for $26,450 at Cherrystone event.
