VATICAN CITY – 1934, 1,30L on 1,25L Blue trial provisional surcharge – SOLD for $17,500

1934 1,30L on 1,25L Blue trial provisional surcharge, a beautifully centered used single of this Vatican City rarity, the “1,30” between the bars is significantly smaller than the normal provisional surcharge of the 1934 issue, luxuriant color on brilliant white paper, neat cancel at bottom right, extremely fine; this unusual surcharge was a trial or essay that was prepared when the provisional overprints were being made (not a variety within the surcharge setting), one sheet of 100 was erroneously delivered to the post office and almost half of the sheet was used before the error was discovered; an amazingly rare postally used stamp and one of the most important rarities of this country that rarely comes on the market, in fact this is the first example we have ever had the pleasure to offer in our auctions; signed A.
