Pregnancy nausea & vomiting

More than fifty percent of all pregnant women suffer from what is commonly known as ‘morning sickness’. Nausea and vomiting during pregnancy maybe more sever in some women than others. Please note that morning sickness does not mean it happens only in the morning. In fact it can happen at any time of the day.

As of now there are no confirmed reasons for this occurrence but common theory attributes it to hormonal changes taking place within the body. The NVP (nausea and vomiting during pregnancy) usually begins around the 6th week, peaks around the 9th, and starts to decrease around the 12th week. There are a minority who suffer from this condition for a longer time, and a really small section who suffer from NVP throughout their pregnancy. Depending on your condition, you might have to alter your daily routine because nausea does make it hard to concentrate.

The vomiting isn’t really harmful for the mother and the child unless it becomes very severe, in which case you should consult the doctor because excessive vomiting and the inability to keep food down can lead to a deficiency of nutrients for the mother and more importantly the growing child inside her. This symptom is called ‘hyperemesis gravidarum’. Untreated, it can also lead to dehydration. If you experience dehydration symptoms like dark yellow urine, please contact the doctor because extreme NVP is better treated as early as possible.

The nausea and vomiting can be controlled to some extent by making some changes in your diet. This involves avoiding fried, fatty and spicy food. Have some snacks (like crackers) every 2 hours so that your stomach doesn’t remain empty for a long time. Strong odours can often aggravate nausea so if you can, get someone else to do the cooking for you. Also don’t lie down immediately after you eat. Keep fluid intake frequent with small amounts. Do not take liquids just before or after meals. Often keeping something sweet or tangy in your mouth relieves nausea. Of course you need to take lots of rest because fatigue adds to nausea. So making alternate arrangements for household chores will be a good idea. A walk out in the fresh air also helps since suffocation is another thing that aggravates nausea. If acupressure suits you, you can go for acupressure wrist bands for a long term but slightly slow solution.

You can of course opt for drugs as well but it is generally advisable to avoid over the counter drugs as far as possible during pregnancy. What drugs you can get for your condition depends on your doctor and where you live because some medicines are banned in some places. In all, it is very natural for a pregnant woman to experience nausea and vomiting and there’s nothing wrong with trying to keep it to a minimum. Again, the doctor is meant to be pestered!
