Benifits of Curd

When it’s hot, all that we can bear to eat or drink is something cool. Could anything be better than curd, one of the healthiest, safest and most suitable things to have in the summer? It’s been part of the Indian diet for decades, and quite rightly too, as everyone from a small baby to a senior citizen, can easily digest it.

Immunity booster
According to Dr S P Bayotra, senior consultant, internal medicine, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi, consuming curd can help us live longer lives. “Eating yoghurt on a regular basis helps improve the body’s immunity,” he explains, adding, “The bacterial cultures in curd stimulate the action of white blood cells, which helps fight off any infection and prevent immune-related diseases.” He adds, “It’s even suitable for people who are lactose intolerant and find it difficult to drink milk.”

Infection Fighter
According to Dr Bayotra, there is nothing better than curd to deal with stomach infections caused by the heat. He says, “Since curd is made of lactase instead of lactose, it is easily digestible and provides relief to the stomach. Even children suffering from stomach infection or diarrhea can benefit from it. Also, eating curd or even drinking lassi made of curd provides relief from the heat and aids digestion.”

Good source of calcium
“Curd is rich in minerals and is highly advisable for those suffering from osteoporosis,” explains Dr Rajneesh Kapoor, director – interventional cardiology, Medanta Medicity, Gurgaon. He adds, “In fact, curd made from skimmed milk is excellent for heart patients and those suffering from high cholesterol as it is rich in carbohydrates, proteins and calcium but has no bad fats at all.”

Cosmetic warrior
And that’s not all. According to beauty expert Bharti Taneja, “Curd is one of the best remedies to combat dandruff. Apply it to your hair, keep it on for around 30 minutes and then wash off. Or mix it with flour and use as a paste for smooth skin. It’s great for sunburn too.”
